BREAKING NEWS: Randfontein Executive Mayor resigns

'I am happy that we got to serve under you as our leader but I am unhappy that it took you so long to go' - Member of Council.

It has been confirmed, Randfontein Executive Mayor, Sylvia Thebenare has resigned effective on 25 March, 2015.

Council will now have to submit their nominations for the next Executive Mayor of Randfontein.

“I am happy that we got to serve under you as our leader but I am unhappy that it took you so long to go,” said Solly May, member of the Randfontein Council.

It is unclear why the Mayor resigned but according to numerous DA Councillors, “It is as a result of the vote of no confidence that the DA and opposition put to the Council late last year.”

The ruling party (ANC) elected the Speaker of Randfontein Local Municipality’s Council as the new Mayor of Randfontein.

Opposition parties including the DA have seconded the motion and unanimously it was decided that now Ex-Speaker Mzi Elias Khumalo who is also the Chairperson of the ANC West Rand has been elected as the new Randfontein Executive Mayor.
