Truck hijackers busted

Two arrested by Soweto Flying Squad for the crime.

Members of the Soweto Flying Squad managed to arrest two suspects at an intersection next to Toekomsrus involved in a well-orchestrated truck hijacking.

The herald was informed that the suspects targeted the truck around 11am on Thursday last week when it had stopped at an intersection in Brandvlei. The driver was forced out and the suspects sped off.

According to Warrant Officer T. Rametsi of the Soweto Flying Squad, “The truck was then spotted around 12am that day by members of the flying squad at the Impala Road and N12 intersection. My partner and I signaled at the driver to pull over and it seemed like he was complying but once he stopped he jumped out of the truck and attempted to run away,” Rametsi explained.

The suspect was eventually shot by the Flying Squad members, wounding him in his lower body and then apprehended. Officers questioned him about the firearm used in the truck hijacking but the suspect notified them that there were two other vehicles with suspects involved in the hijacking. The suspect also told officers that the firearm used was in the red VW Golf tailing the truck.

The Golf was stopped at Zuurbekom Road next to Toekomsrus but no firearm was found. The suspect in the Golf was also taken into custody. The white Polo with the remaining suspects got away. Police suspect that the firearm is still in their possession.

If you have any information regarding the white Polo that got away or information about the hijacking please contact Constable Gloria Maswanganye on 014 576 1122.
