Bomb threat at Absa

'We are working with the relevant authorities to investigate the matter further'.

An investigation is underway after Absa at Village Square Mall in the Randfontein CBD had to be evacuated following a bomb threat this past Friday.

“Absa confirms that an incident took place at our Randfontein branch on 23 January 2015. We are working with the relevant authorities to investigate the matter further and will take appropriate action once the investigation has been completed,” Byron Kennedy, Barclays Africa Group Spokesperson said.

The call came through at around 1pm and the bank staff had to quickly evacuate the mall along with the staff of Capitec Bank which is next door to Absa.

The bomb threat is the third in Randfontein since 2013. The First National Bank (FNB) in Main Street had to be closed once in June 2013 and a second time in September last year when they too received anonymous calls about bombs in the bank.

The Randfontein Traffic Department assisted at the scene and directed traffic away from the area while the Randfontein SAPS were called out to the scene to investigate.

The Randfontein SAPS has not yet commented on the incident or if a bomb was in fact found inside the bank.
