Carjacker stopped in his tracks

Police members help man after crash only to discover he stole the vehicle moments before.

Police have sent a clear message to carjackers after a 37-year-old man was arrested for vehicle theft.

According to Randfontein police spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst, “Police were conducting a routine patrol in Culemborg Park when they witnessed a Toyota Land Cruiser driving recklessly. This occurred a day before New Year’s.

“Subsequently, police followed the vehicle and saw that the driver lost control of the vehicle in Kingfischer Avenue in Helikonpark. The vehicle then collided with a fence and police assisted the man when they discovered that the vehicle was stolen moments before the crash.

“Police also discovered that a second vehicle was stolen at the same address. The entire matter was investigated by the Protea VIS unit.

“The suspect has subsequently made his first appearance in court on 2 January.”

Acting Station Commander, Col. Marius Smit was impressed with the members who handled the case and applauded them for their vigilance and quick response. In addition to this, they received praise for the recovery of the vehicle and arrest of the suspect.
