Elderly man attacked by gunmen

Police open a case of attempted murder.

Police have opened a case of attempted murder after an elderly man, 61, was brutally attacked by three suspects, one of them armed at his home in Tenacres over the weekend.

According to the victim, Hugo Maré the men attempted to break into his house.

Maré told police that he had walked outside his house to investigate an alarm going off at his carport when he was confronted by the three men, one of which was armed.

The armed man pointed a gun at him and instructed him to be quiet. The suspect then proceeded to pull the trigger but no shot was discharged from the weapon and he subsequently hit the victim on the head with the firearm.

The trigger was pulled for the second time and still no shot was discharged after which the victim allegedly ran towards the house. A shot was fired by the suspect but miraculously missed the man and hit a wall.

The victim was then caught by the suspects again and was pointed with a pistol against his head.

The victim’s wife allegedly noticed the happenings from within the house and fired a shot through the door after which the suspects fled on foot.

Warrant Officer Karen Nel is currently investigating a case of attempted murder and not house break-in as a result of the circumstances of what transpired.
