Rapist sentenced to life for targeting 15-year-old

'Sentence a victory for the justice system'

Mlungisi Samuel Sekude, 26, was found guilty in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court and sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a 15-year-old girl last year.

On 30 March 2013, Sekude raped a girl at a house in Mohlakeng Extension 4. He was then arrested on 4 April 2013 – five days after the incident.

“The case, which was concluded on Friday, 31 October, is considered a victory for the justice system,” says Regional Court prosecutor Adéle Britz.

“The case relied on the witnesses’ accurate testimonies about what happened that night. The police really came through with the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Marie Strooh going above and beyond,” she adds.

During the court proceedings the prosecutors found that this was not Sekude’s first appearance in court.

He also was arrested in 2006 and found guilty of rape. He received eight years imprisonment, was declared unfit to posses a firearm and released on parole in December 2011 suspended until 2015. The previous conviction and the age of the victim at the time of incident were contributing factors of the harsh sentence.

Sekude was sentenced to life in prison and an additional four years for assault.

In cases such as these it is common practice to register the sexual offender on the National Register for Sex Offenders.

A photo of the man will be made available later today.
