Walk for man’s best friend

More than R5 000 raised at annual SPCA Fun Walk.

Dogs are a man’s best friend.

The public had the opportunity recently to return the favour at the annual SPCA Fun Walk.

According to Janette Muller, inspector of the Randfontein SPCA, “The idea was to create awareness of animal week, animal cruelty and support for the local SPCA. This also was to raise funds and come together as a community and talking their dogs for a walk.”

Muller confirmed around 50 people attended the event and more than R5 000 was raised. All the funds will benefit the abandoned, sick, injured and neglected animals in Randfontein.

The walk stretched 5 to 7km from the SPCA offices with water stops for the dogs. Ria de Clercq, owner of Chap Chick in Homestead Avenue gave the dogs some treats at the water stop at her shop.

Dogs seen at the event ranged from the mean ones such as Rottweilers and pit bulls to the menace and naughty ones such as Jack Russells and Yorkshire terriers.

There was also a colouring and dog-owner lookalike competition, refreshments and jumping castles.

Muller says the SPCA is looking to make this event a more regular occasion as it is for a good cause.
