West Rand firefighters prevent tragedy

'It is unclear as to what started the fire'

Regional commander of the Westonaria Fire Department, Terra Terblanche confirmed on Friday that no one was injured or killed in Thursday’s fire at a warehouse in Westonaria.

At around 1pm a town came to a halt when a warehouse on Edwards Avenue caught fire.

Terblanche says, “A 400 square metre warehouse situated above Ackermans and Fair Price caught fire at around 1pm.

“The Westonaria Fire Department attended the scene and upon our arrival we found the warehouse filled with furniture and DIY hardware store stock consumed by the blaze. We immediately started to contain the fire.”

He adds that soon fire fighters from Randfontein, Krugersdorp and Sibanye Gold Mines rushed to assist.

Thousands of community members then stood around the scene as the West Rand fire fighters worked tirelessly until around 7pm to extinguish the blaze. They managed to prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding buildings.

“It is still unclear as to what started the fire, but the Westonaria Fire Department will conduct a thorough investigation as of 3 October. Details about the cause of the fire will be made available in due course,” says Terblanche.

“The Westonaria Fire Department also monitored the scene throughout the evening to ensure that the fire does not reignite,” Terblanche concludes.
