Westonaria crime stats revealed

Sexual crimes went down from 218 to 35.

Crime statistics for the Westonaria police station have been released.

Although national crime stats were released this past weekend by police minister Nkosinathi Nhleko and indicated that murder and other violent crimes had gone up, the herald decided to look into how criminal elements within the Westonaria district for the past ten years looked like.

The period under review is from April 2004 to March 2005 compared against this financial year measured from April 2013 to March 2014.

Crimes that showed a decrease for the period under review:

• Murder moved from 63 incidents to 18 incidents in this period while the total number of sexual crimes decreased from 218 to 35 incidents.

• Attempted murder also went down to 13 incidents from 63 incidents while burglary at residential premises down 341 from 983 cases from 10 years ago

Crimes that showed a increase for the period under review:

• In the crimes that showed a increase, the total number of people driving under the influence of alcohol has gone up from 55 cases ten years ago to a shocking 143 cases for this financial year.

• Drug related crimes have also gone up from 63 to 103 cases in this financial year.

• These are but some of the crimes tabled in the report.
