National Crime stats released

Violent crimes such as murder, attempted murder have increased.

Crime statistics have been released and indicate that while incidents of sexual assault among others have decreased, violent crimes such as murder and attempted murder have increased.

This was announced at a press briefing in Pretoria by police commissioner Riah Phiyega.

She expressed her concerns to journalists.

The 2013/2014 financial year statistics indicate the following.

Violent crimes that have shown an increase:

• Murder: up by five per cent
• Attempted murder: up by 4,6 per cent
• Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm: up by 1,5 per cent
• Robbery with aggravated circumstances: up by 12,7 per cent

Crimes that showed a decrease:

• Common assault: down by 3,3 per cent
• Sexual offences: down by 5,6 with rape and sexual assault also dropping
• Arson: down by 4,2 per cent 
• Malicious damage to property: down by 1,1 per cent. 
• Housebreakings: down by 0,6 per cent• Motor vehicle theft: down by 0,6 per cent
• Bank robberies: down by 77,4 per cent over five years, however, such incidents have increased from seven incidents in 2012/2013 to 21 in 2013/2014
