Mayor takes a stand against violence

'This hopefully will encourage people to speak out.'

Randfontein Local Municipality Executive Mayor Sylvia Thebenare together with the people in her office hosted a successful anti gender-based violence campaign in Mohlakeng Extension 11 yesterday (28 August).

They handed out pamphlets with information regarding violence and spoke about ways to report such incidents.

Jane Khoza who is the gender coordinator in the Office of the Mayor says, “The main purpose of the event was to create awareness about gender-based violence and encourage people to speak out against it.

“Despite awareness created about such issues, we know that some people are still victims of gender-based violence and we have to encourage them to speak out.

“It is the only way that we can put an end to this and have a society that does not tolerate issues that aim to degrade them or make them feel unworthy in any way,” says Khoza. She adds that the mayor is very passionate about empowering women in every way and that such a campaign is aimed at doing just that.
