Cook trial: ‘Accused was not pregnant’

State also believes Cook was not acting alone.

A doctor testified in the Johannesburg High Court sitting at Palm Ridge that accused Loretta Innocentia Cook was not pregnant as she claimed.

Cook, a Toekomsrus resident is being accused of cutting a baby from her friends womb with a razor blade. Cook is facing charges of murder for allegedly killing her friend Valencia Behrens and attempted murder of Behrens’ baby girl. The baby was found with a cut on her head, believed to have been sustained during the incident.

The murder on 6 January 2012 in Toekomsrus made headlines.

In yet another day of the trial, Dr Otillia Mazhindu from Leratong Hospital testified that tests and sonar examinations revealed that the accused was not pregnant and had not been pregnant for some time.

It is also believed that Cook had lured Behrens to her house after telling her she had bought her a pram and baby clothes. There she allegedly carried out the brutal murder. 

Behrens’ body was found on the ground outside the kitchen door. Her baby was found lying in the passage of Cook’s home. 

According to media reports, the state believes that Cook was not acting alone.

The matter was postponed today.
