One injured in cigarette truck hijacking

Man transported to hospital as criminals target truck carrying cigarettes.

A man was shot and transported to a nearby hospital after two suspects opened fire on him and a truck driver during a hijacking in Helikon Park yesterday.

According to Tex Armed Reaction Operations Manager Coenie Bekker the incident occurred at approximately 11.30am on Kremetart Street.

“According to information received, the truck was carrying cigarettes meant to be offloaded at the time. We received a panic alarm from the owners of the shop and immediately responded.

“Upon our arrival we were informed that the two suspects travelling in a suspicious BMW with a third suspect had parked near the shop. Two of them got out and approached the truck on foot while firing shots at the truck driver and his assistant.

“The assistant was injured and while this happened, the suspects jumped into the truck, forced the two to the back of the truck and sped off.

“Fortunately, the driver managed to press the panic button, which led to the suspects fleeing on foot and the recovery of the truck. The third suspect and driver of the BMW also fled.”

No suspects were apprehended. Police is investigating.
