Resident attacked by bogus cops

Community warned of criminals who dress up in police uniforms following attack.

The community of Randfontein has been asked to be on the alert after a resident was attacked by two men impersonating police officers earlier this week.

EPR operations manager Mac van Zyl confirmed, “One of our clients was attacked by two bogus police officers dressed in full police uniform during a house robbery at the Vleikop agriculture holdings recently.

“According to the client who was at the home, he heard a knock on his door. He then stood up and spotted two men dressed in police uniform through the window.

“There was another person with them, who allegedly was handcuffed and he immediately thought they were genuine officers who needed his assistance with something. As he opened the door the officers forced their way into the house and assaulted the client with a metal object. The client fought back and somehow managed to overpower the suspects, which led to them fleeing from the scene.

“We would like to urge our clients and everyone in the community to request for an identification document whenever approached by a police officer. There are a lot of good policemen out there, but there are those who are trying to taint the police’s image.”

Van Zyl added, “Residents need to start asking for police officers to identify themselves and when in doubt about the identification of the person, they need to contact their local police station for verification of that particular officer.”
