Festival to keep children off the streets

Toekomsrus children showcase their talent and gymnast skills.

The Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation hosted a successful West Rand Gymnaestrada festival, which included dancing and showing off skills on Saturday (19 July) at the Toekomsrus Community Hall.

According to the sports promotion officer Kwena Makgoe, “The event was a massive success and attended by more than 100 children from Randfontein and the entire West Rand.

“We are really pleased with the outcome of the event and the attendance thereof. It shows that our children are taking part in developmental programmes and are keeping out of the streets and that’s exactly what we want,” says Makgoe.

“The purpose of the event is to keep the youth of the West Rand away from social ills as well as to promote a healthy lifestyle through sports. Numerous teams throughout the region were invited to compete at the competition. On the day, five teams were selected to represent the West Rand at the provincial Gymnaestrada festival to take place on 6 September at the Ekurhuleni Civic Centre.”

Makgoe adds that he among other people in the department are content with the selected teams and are confident that they will put the West Rand on the map.
