Sewage floods resident’s home

"It is frustrating having to live with this sewage in my yard."

A resident is considering taking matters into his own hands by cleaning up his yard and sending the bill to the Randfontein Local Municipality for its mess.

This comes after his yard was flooded with sewage that emanates from what is suspected to be a blocked sewerage pipe that pushes sewage up a manhole.

According to the resident, Gerrie Brand who resides on Lourie Road, this is the third time this month this has happened. He has decided enough is enough.

“I don’t know exactly how this happens, but I heard that local restaurants spill oil and other fatty substances into their drains and as a result, it blocks the main sewerage pipe, but I cannot confirm this.

“It is frustrating having to live with this sewage in my yard,” says Brand. He adds that his dogs are eating the sewage because it’s all over the yard.

He explains that he has contacted the municipality regarding this and although they send out municipal workers to unblock the drain, they do not clear the rubbish that remains.

He says he has requested them to clean it up but was told that there were no chemicals, let alone any resources to do this.

He says he will get a service provider to clean up his yard and will send the municipality the bill so that he will be reimbursed.

The herald has forwarded questions to the Randfontein Local Municipality mayoral spokesperson Lucky Chiya who was not immediately available for comment.
