Warning: Missing manhole cover poses danger

Open manhole in Helikon Park a serious danger to everyone.

An open manhole at the corner of Horingbek Street and Jan Fiskaal Road can be considered life-threatening if nothing is done soon.

According to local resident Boet van der Wath this manhole cover has been missing for the past three weeks – and has been left open.

He explains that children in the area climb down the manhole and although it is not clear why they do it, it holds a great threat to them as they may sustain injuries.

“Pedestrians in the area also are at risk as this open manhole is not visible at night and may result in someone falling into it,” Van der Wath says.

He says the municipality did cover up a manhole further down the road.

“I want to encourage the Randfontein Local Municipality to cover up this manhole as soon as possible as it is an accident waiting to happen,” Van der Wath says.

The herald contacted Randfontein Local Municipality spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa on several occasions but still is waiting for his response.
