Municipality caught up in scam drama

Criminals posing as municipal workers working in the oflfice of the mayor are said to be soliciting bribes and asking for favours.

The Randfontein Local municipality has expressed concern over fraudulent activities allegedly taking place in the name of the Office of the Executive Mayor.

According to Randfontein mayoral spokesperson Lucky Chiya, there are people claiming to be from the municipality who are soliciting money from residents.

“We have come to realise that there are people going around soliciting bribes or favours from community members while claiming that they work for the municipality particularly, the office of the mayor while they do not.

“This does not sit well with us and it will not be tolerated,” says Chiya.

He adds that this is often done in such a way were people ask for monetary donations for certain projects among other things.

‘We have an Act in place which guides municipal workers to conduct themselves in a certain way and soliciting money is not one of them.

“Therefore, we call upon members of the community to be vigilant at all times and know that if it feels and sounds wrong then it usually is.

“We also urge those who have may have any information about people participating in these actions to come forward with an affidavit,” says Chiya.

According to him, the municipality will then launch an investigation into the allegations together with the police.
