Residents up in arms over open manhole

The theft of manhole covers is an escalating problem in Randfontein.

A dangerous open manhole at the corner of Kenneth Road and Tinus de Jongh Street has still not been attended to despite numerous complaints by residents.

According to local resident Dave Cock, he personally reported the issue of the open manhole to the municipality on more than one occasion during the past weeks, but to no avail.

The Herald recently reported on the manhole after a dog fell into it and had to be rescued by the Randfontein SPCA.

According to Cock, just like any other complaint, the municipality has also chosen to ignore this as well.

“I cannot believe that the municipality still chooses to disregard such problems in our areas.

“I reported this incident more than three weeks ago and still nothing has been done.

“Will it take a child falling down there and getting hurt for the municipality to wake up?”

The Herald contacted municipal spokesperson Lucky Chiya who says that open manholes have been problem for months on end in Randfontein.

“It goes without saying that manhole covers are being stolen and sold to local scrap metal dealers for a quick buck.

“This is rather unfortunate because it just sets us back as the municipality when it comes to the upkeep of Randfontein.

“I can confirm that we are working towards fixing this problem.

“One of the ways in which we hope to curb this problem is by replacing steel manhole covers with concrete ones.”
