Transformer explosion injures five

All five were next to the transformer at the time of the incident. One of them sustained facial injuries.

Five people were injured during a massive transformer explosion at Meadow Feeds this afternoon (1 April) at approximately 2pm.

It is currently unclear as to what caused the explosion, but according to information received, all five victims were near the transformer when the incident occurred.

The Herald spoke to Public Safety Regional Commander Bennie Mohlabeng who confirmed the incident and said that four victims sustained minor injuries while another sustained facial injuries.

“Paramedics were called out to the scene and upon arrival, four patients had to be rushed to Lenmed Private Hospital where they are currently being treated.

“Owing to extensive injuries sustained by the other patient, a chopper had to be called out for her,” says Mohlabeng.

“Upon arrival, she was airlifted to Milpark Hospital where she will be treated,” says Mohlabeng.

He adds that the chopper had to land at the Randfontein Rugby Club owing to the fact that it was the only isolated place nearby.
