Traffic officer injured in hit and run

The officer sustained major facial and chest injuries after she was run down by a motorist who fled from the scene.

A female traffic officer was critically injured after she was hit by a car on the R28 today.

It currently remains unclear whether the officer is a Randfontein traffic officer or if she’s a provincial officer who was on duty in Randfontein at the time of the incident.

According to a witness at the scene, the officer apparently pulled over a vehicle for inspection when she was struck by another car which immediately drove off.

The Herald has spoken to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring who says that upon arrival at the scene, paramedics found the officer lying on the side of the road.

“Our paramedics immediately assessed the officer at the scene and it was found that she sustained major facial and chest injuries.

“She was then placed on a spine board before she was transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment,” says Meiring.

He adds that local authorities were at the scene and will further investigate the incident.
