Indigent subsidy applications open

Residents who earn R2500 or less are urged to register for the indigent subsidy in order to get assistance from the municipality in terms of their rates and taxes.

The Westonaria Local Municipality is calling on all residents who earn less than R2500 to come forward and register for the indigent subsity in order to receive assistance from the municipality in terms of water and lights as well as their rates and taxes.

This is from Westonaria Local Municipality Executive Mayor Nonkoliso Tundzi who says that this is expected to help ease the pressure of struggling families in different communities.

“As a caring government, we took a conscious decision when we were elected into office that the needs of our communities will be priorized

“It is through such initiatives that we try to address the issues of our people the best way we know how and it brings me joy to announce that those that need our assistance need to come forward and register for services,” says Tundzi.o settle their municipal accounts.

So far, the municipality has registered 2772 households who have been approved for the indigent subsidy and will be getting assistance from their municipality for at least 12 months.

In order to register for the indigent subsidy, residents need to bring their green bar-coded South African Identity Document (ID), their latest statement of municipal accounts and a proof of income if employed.

Residents who are unemployed are urged to bring in an affidavit declaring their status of unemployment, a copy of a bank statement where applicable and a proof of any other grant received as well as a letter of authority where applicable.

“Once your application has been approved, you will be classified as an indigent for 12 months and once that period has lapsed, you will need to register once again to be classified as an indigent and the same documentation will be needed,” says Tundzi.

Those approved will receive free basic municipality services such as six kiloliters of water and fifty kilowatts of electricity every month.

Meanwhile, charges for refuse removal, sewerage as well as rates will remain at no cost for their duration on the system.
