Hawks swoop down on drug dealers

The West Rand Organised Crime Unit managed to make a small dent in the drug trade in Toekomsrus on 28 January.

The West Rand organised Crime Unit, assisted by the Roodepoort K9 Unit attempted to smoke drug dealers out of their hideouts in Toekomsrus in the early hours of 28 January.

Officers descended on Toekomsrus at approximately 4am and conducted a search and seizure operation acting on a search and seizure warrant obtained from the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court.

According to the Hawks, 59 houses were searched during the operation, which came about as a result of tip-offs received from the community about the drug trade in the area.

Drugs has long been a thorn in the side of Toekomsrus residents and the police in the area.

Sixty-six packets of dagga with a street value of R660 were seized in Blackberry Street and two suspects aged 42 and 20 were subsequently arrested on charges of dealing in dagga.

Four-and-a-half Mandrax tablets were recovered in Aries Street and a 34-year-old man was arrested on charges of dealing in drugs.

Another 32 Mandrax tablets, 45 half-moon Rocks (crack, cocaine) and five pockets of Tik were seized in Plaatje Street where a 45-year-old man was arrest for dealing in drugs.

“We appreciate the cooperation we received from the community in the fight against crime,” says the head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Major General Shadrack Sibiya.

“We woke some families in the early hours for the search and at many addresses we got nothing, but they cooperated.”

All suspects are due to appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 30 January on charges of dealing in drugs.
