Suspect caught after botched hijacking

The truck hijacked was carrying cigarettes worth over R100 000.

One man has been arrested and five others are still at large after a botched hijacking of a vehicle carrying cigarettes this morning (27 January) outside a local shop on Village Street.

According to a victim who spoke to the Herald on condition of anonymity, he was delivering the cigarettes at the shop when two heavily armed men entered the business premises and grabbed him by his waist.

They forced him back into his vehicle which was carrying cigarettes worth over R100 000 at the time and drove off with him.

They made a stop at Stubbs Street just outside the Central Business District (CBD) where they were joined by a group of men traveling in a grey Audi A4 and a white Toyota Quantum minibus.

“A group of men emerged from both cars and offloaded the cigarettes from my vehicle into the Quantum.

“Shortly after this, they fled from the scene in both getaway vehicles and I pressed the panic button and immediately notified the police as well.

“I gave them a description of the vehicles in question and fortunately, one of the suspects was caught and arrested in Protea Glen, Soweto,” says the man.

According to him, the goods have since been recovered following the arrest.

Meanwhile, Randfontein SAPS spokesperson confirms that the incident occured and says that fortunately the victim came out alive and unharmed.
