Woman lies about armed robbery

A local woman has been arrested after it was found that she lied about being robbed at gunpoint.

A 25-year-old woman was arrested when on 14 November after being caught lying to police about an alleged armed robbery in Toekomsrus.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson, Captain Appel Ernst, the woman reported a case of armed robbery at the Randfontein SAPS on 8 November.

She alleged that she had been robbed at gunpoint by a known suspect in Papaya Street, Toekomsrus.

“Warrant Officer Karen Nel was appointed to handle the case,” says Ernst.

“She started her investigation and interviewed the woman, but was informed by the woman that she wanted to withdraw the case.

“Further investigation revealed that the woman had lied about when she opened the case.”

The woman was arrested on 14 November for perjury and will appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court on 18 December.

Acting station commander at the Randfontein SAPS, Colonel Marius Smit has warned that perjury is a serious offense.

“Any person who is caught reporting false cases, be it for insurance purposes or for retribution, will face the full might of the law,” says Smit.

Reporting a false case is punishable with imprisonment or a fine, or both.
