Fishy activities at local dam

The activities have come to a halt after the SPCA and the Department of Water Affairs were called to intervene.

The Herald has received damning information about the Donaldson Dam and the apparently fishy activities that have been happening there.

Information received revealed that over the months, the Donaldson Dam in Westonaria has been neglected in terms of mantainance and that a local mine has been draining its water, reducing the water level and compromising the ecosystem that lives in it. According to local fisherman Carel van Sittert, the dam has become disgusting.

“Not only do I have a problem with the water being drained out of the dam continuously, I also have a problem with the general mantainance of the entire place.

‘Very often, the grass is so tall and left uncut for months on end and once one enquires about it, management is quick to put the blame on the Westonaria Local Municipality.

“However, they continuously bill us to use the dam.

“My question is, where does the money go when the place looks like that?”says the man.

Donaldson Dam project manager Kwezi Sithole confirms that the dam was drained by the mine on numerous occasionsbut he says he is clueless as to why.

“Having received complaints from frequent visitors and fishermen, we took the matter up with management of the mine and pleaded them to stop draining the water but they kept on ignoring us

“Until this day we have no knowledge as to why they decided to drain the dam,” says Sithole.

He adds that however, that activity has come to a halt after the SPCA and the Department of Water Affairs were called to intervene.

Asked on the issue of maintaining the entire premises, Sithole says that he would rather not comment.

Meanwhile the Herald has forwarded a list of questions to the relevant authorities at the mine and awaits comment.
