Local comedian is out to entertain audiences

RANDPARK RIDGE – A resident from Randpark Ridge, Pravesh Mungaldave has always been passionate about comedy.

Pravesh Mungaldave’s career in the entertainment industry spans over a decade.

The comedian from Randpark Ridge had always been passionate about comedy. He realised in the early 2000s that he needed to follow his passion but, at the time, there wasn’t a lot of comedy available. “It [comedy]was scarce that time and I would watch whichever show I could but the comedy industry has grown ever since,” he said.

Mungaldave subsequently joined Toastmasters Club in Sandton in order to improve his presentation and public speaking skills. At the time, he had made it to the Gauteng finals of humorous speech contest after three stages. “I thought if I could do that where people are judging you, then I can do stand-up comedy on stage where I am free to speak my mind. That’s how my career started as a comedian,” he said.

He recalled that during the lockdown, the entertainment industry was seriously affected and, just like other entertainers, he was faced with a huge challenge.
He reverted to online gigs. “But online gigs are not the same as performing in a theatre or performing in a live show because comedians need audiences. We need the interaction, we need to speak to people.”

However, he didn’t allow the pandemic to hold him back. He wrote a one-man show called All we need is laugh and recorded it in a studio with two cameramen and a technical staff member.
“I broadcasted that show on Quicket for two weekends, one in August and another in October 2020. That show did very well, it received a nomination for top online comedy show at the South African Comedy Awards online edition 2020,” he said.

Last year, Mungaldave received the Artes Award for Comedy.
His next goal was to embark on a tour in the country where he will perform in different provinces. “After that, I would like to go to the United States and India. The comedy in India is really expanding so would love to go to Delhi and Mumbai.”

On March 30, he will be performing a 60-minute special at the Funk BA in Fourways. Tickets can be purchased online at www.quicket.co.za
