LINDEN – Betty Bangle will be performing at the Satori Family Restaurant in Linden next month.

With a dash of mascara, the teasing of a wig and just a dash of glitter, Betty Bangles has been entertaining people for more than 20 years.

Over the years she has performed at various nightclubs, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and even weddings. With her drag show, Scintillating Sinners coming up on March 5 at Satori Family Restaurant in Linden, Betty Bangles will share the stage with partner Riri Rouge.

Bangles en die dossers on Afrikaans television. The man who portrays Betty Bangles character – a fun and outgoing personality with a passion for the stage – shared his journey with Randburg Sun. Bernard Buy said he started Scintillating Sinners in Linden about a year ago but had been performing for more than two decades. In 2019, he made his New York debut as Betty Bangles at the historic Stonewall Inn during the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. “It is a show [Scintillating Sinners] that people can come and sit back, relax, forget about everyday life and the hustling, enjoy the evening and have a laugh. That’s the point of the show – is to have people enjoy it,” he said.

He added that they always put a PG16 on the poster advertising the show as there was often ‘suggestive humour’. “Some of the jokes are of sexual nature but it is never vulgar, but we always put that warning just in case, we don’t want someone to come to the show and say that’s not what we expected.”

When Buy was young, he would put down a sheet as a makeshift stage in the living room and performed for his parents. That’s when he knew that he wanted to be on stage. It was only when he finished school that he told his parents he wanted to study drama.

“They said no it is not a job, you need to so do something more substantive with your life.” He then took a gap year and decided to study hairdressing. “Acting is not something you find, it finds you. I have done a few cameo appearances in series. I’ve done extras work on Generations and stuff like that but nothing professional. It’s mostly my drag character that I do.”
