COJ shocked following teenage pregnancy stats

JOBURG – The trauma of pregnancy termination and the health issues involved remain sad and unfortunate.

The City of Joburg said in a statement that they had learnt with concern that there were more than
23 000 teenage pregnancies in Gauteng between March 2020 and April 2021.

“The figure was revealed by the Provincial Health MEC, Madoda Sambatha, revealing that 2 976 girls between the ages of 10 and 19 years chose to terminate their pregnancy,” said Sipho Mengezeleli, spokesperson for the speaker of the City of Johannesburg, Nonceba Molwele.

Mengezeleli said this was a serious issue which was the cause of school dropouts and had serious effects on the health and future of the young girls.

“The trauma of pregnancy termination and the health issues involved remain sad and unfortunate. The CoJ Moral Regeneration Movement calls for practical engagement between youth/students, teachers, SGBS and parents within the City of Johannesburg on the matter. This is a product of the breakdown of family values that cause moral degeneration in our society.”
