Late City of Johannesburg mayor Geoff Makhubo laid to rest at Westpark Cemetery

JOBURG – Friends and family of the late mayor Geoff Makhubo paid tribute to him in a funeral service at Westpark Cemetery.

The late City of Johannesburg mayor, Geoff Makhubo was laid to rest at the Westpark Cemetery on July 14.

Makhubo passed away on July 9, after he had been admitted to hospital for complications arising from Covid-19. Makhubo had served as the African Nation Congress’ treasurer and later as an MMC responsible for Finance in the City of Johannesburg. In December 2019 he was elected Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg.

Councillor Eunice Mgcina, the acting executive mayor and MMC for Health and Social Development said, “We had hoped that the executive mayor would beat the virus and return to work and lead the city as we face this pandemic that has devastated lives and livelihoods. Sadly, it was not to be.”

She added, “Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, daughters, mother and the rest of his family, friends and comrades.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the passing of City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Geoff Makhubo as a loss to the City of Johannesburg and the province at large.

During the funeral, his friend and colleague MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane said that he was a true servant of the people and those who were privileged to know him can attest to his commitment to improving the lives of others.

Paul Mashatile, the ANC’s treasurer-general, said that Makhubo was hardworking and dependable and his energy and razor-sharp mind will be missed.

Gauteng premier David Makhura said that Makhubo’s legacy will live through his family and friends, as well as within the ANC and the communities in which he worked. “There are many things that can be said about comrade Geoff… He was a battle-tested revolutionary, he was like tempered steel, he fought many battles but he was a great tactician.”

He concluded, “To his friends, family and comrades, we are heartbroken by this monumental loss and departure of our leader, we have to mourn his untimely departure but we must celebrate his breathtaking life.”
