Rand Water receives strike action alert from Samwu

JOBURG – Rand Water disputes allegations made by the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu), that they did had failed to consult with the Union before making a decision not to pay its employee's performance incentive bonuses.

Rand Water has received written notification from one of its employee-affiliated unions, the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) of its intention to embark on strike action from 8am on 21 April.

According to Rand Water, the union has forwarded that Rand Water had failed to consult with it before making a decision not to pay its employees’ performance incentive bonuses which is the reason for the strike action. Rand Water disputes this.

“Mindful of the eminence of the Covid-19 pandemic and conscious of our mandate to ensure an uninterrupted service, Rand Water would like to inform the public that we have adequate systems in place to ensure a sustained supply of bulk potable water to our customers,” said the organisation in a statement on 19 April.

“Rand Water has sound relations with its employee-affiliated unions, based on the concept of good labour-management relations being fundamental to good corporate management. We remain committed to engaging with the union to reach a resolution.”

Rand Water said all customers and stakeholders would be kept fully informed of any developments on this matter.
