The play Klipgebede is proud to be showing once again at the Doxa Deo Theater in Linden, starting on 23 April.
Producer of the play André Stolz said that Klipgebede is a powerful Afrikaans theatre piece presented in the format of a solo show, written specially by playwright Schalk Schoombie for the versatile actress Elma Potgieter.
The title refers to a pile of river stones the character’s husband kept, which becomes a stark symbol of unforgiveness and chimes with the new awareness that the #MeToo-movement brought about.
Potgieter portrays Mariana Kleynhans, a widow who visits her son Gerbrand, a convicted murderer, in prison. Mariana is a resilient middle-class woman with compassion for others who tries to make sense of the circumstances that brought her sensitive child to his fate.
The mystery of what led to the crime is slowly untangled as Mariana narrates the tragi-comic events of her unhappy marriage.
She talks to herself and her son and shares her life story with her best friend Katryn.
“After just two performances of Klipgebede last year, the national Covid-19 restrictions were announced. Just after a little over a year, we dust off this production again. The first performance will take place at the Doxa Deo Theater, on 44 5th Street, Linden, on 23 April,” said Stolz.
The entrance fee is R120 per person.
