Watch out Insta, there are food stylists in town

Foodies, aspiring photographers and food stylists-in-the-making all turned up at Get It’s Picture Perfect with Canon event to learn a little more about their passion.

The event was held at the really pretty Indigo Café at the new (and totally worth a visit) Blueberry Hill Hotel on 28 September. Excitement filled the morning air as our readers sipped bubbly and savoured treats before their notetaking began. Photography and food-styling pros gave the reader attendees some advice on just how to take foodie pics that are simply Instagram perfect! Professional food stylist Gay Mitchell shared her wealth of knowledge on the craft, giving useful hints and tips which left quite a few people cheering and clapping. “When you have really limp greens – this can be lettuce, herbs or spinach – what I always do is soak them in lukewarm water, strain, then transfer them to a seal-able container and leave to chill in the fridge for 10 minutes. And voilà! Your greens turn out as though you’ve just picked them this morning,” she told us. Gay also went on to discuss different textures that work well with different dishes and discussed the new trends that are all the craze in the food industry. “Everything needs to look natural – crumbs, melting ice-cream, hot toast with melted butter, berries scattered on a plate – that is what makes your pictures stand out. Gone are the days where your food has to look perfect and you need to substitute the actual dish for fake alternatives.” After the talks and a few demonstrations of how to get the right lighting when photographing food from the Canon South Africa team, readers tried their own hand at styling and taking photos. They needed to gather props and food items, and they made use of both indoor and outdoor spaces to take those ‘picture perfect’ foodie pics! The morning came to an end with a few spot prizes and lucky draws, courtesy of GLAD and Château Gâteau. All guests walked away with two generous goodiebags from Canon and Get It – not to mention all the new food photography inspo! Keep checking the Get It Joburg North Facebook page for new upand-coming events – trust us, you don’t want to miss out.
