The first-ever Africa and Intercontinental Dance championship and intercontinental battles kicked off with a workshop at the Blairgowrie Recreation Centre on 8 and 9 September.
Choreographers from the USA and France arrived in Randburg to be part of the teaching event.
The USA’s Buddha Stretch, French dancer, choreographer and artistic director, Marrie ‘Poppins’ Bonnevay, JaMarSpartan Jackson and a krump dancer from New York, choreographer and instructor, Candace Brown all spent time with local dancers.
Two-time Red Bull BC One world champion, Bboy Lilou from France, South African Sello Reuben Modiga who has a background in Pantsula workshops as well as Rudi Smit, who concentrated on jazz-funk, were also there.
Competition organisers and an organisation aimed at developing competitive events throughout the world, Global Dance Supreme, said the workshop not only attracted dancers from many studios from the surrounding Johannesburg suburbs, but also from all around South Africa.
Dion van der Merwe, who is from Global Dance Supreme, said each class presented by renowned choreographers and instructors had up to 50 dancers.
“[The dancers] were eager to learn from pioneers and trendsetters in the game; the energy levels and skills were off the charts,” he said.
“For our inaugural event, the Global Dance Supreme management are more than proud of what seems to be the start of a phenomenal week of dance.”
This dance celebration will continue at the Walter Sisulu Hall from 13 to 16 September.
Fairchild Phiri, also from Global Dance Supreme, previously told the Randburg Sun that the dance competition has various divisions and sections, starting from the junior section, with dancers aged seven to 12 years old until the adult division.
“The adult division includes Legion Division, which has up to 40 dancers in the dance group,” he said.
