HONEYDEW – When you arrive for your appointment with Honeydew Police Station Commander Brigadier Anesh Maharaj, a welcoming ace will greet you. Ability Mpfuxelelo Chauke is the new secretary to the station commander and is eager to assist him as well as the community. The Cosmo City resident started her young career at the police station two years ago as a volunteer after completing a diploma course in human resources. After just a few months as a volunteer, Chauke was offered an internship at the provincial head office of the South African Police Service (Saps) in Parktown. Here she was placed in the human resources development department where she handled training courses for police officers. Chauke remained in Parktown until a secretary's post opened in Honeydew and she was accepted after applying for it.

“I'm so happy that words can't express how I feel. I have been patient and worked my way up by proving that I am capable. I needed experience and that is why I decided to volunteer. Working at the provincial office intensified my passion for assisting the police and at times, I would be asked to fill in for the secretary to gain more experience,” said Chauke.

Having started at the Honeydew Police Station this week, Chauke assists the station commander with his diary and schedules, ensuring that he is always prepared and ready to assist the community. Chauke is assisted by Sergeant Mamasedi May who is guiding her to ensure she settles back into the station environment smoothly.

“I want the youth to know that hard work pays off and they must always have a goal they want to achieve. No matter how hard it is or how long it takes, you must try to realise your dreams. Volunteer work is a step to take to gain practical experience.”
