Ferndale DJ turns tables

FERNDALE – Local DJ Josi Chavè is on a mission to entertain you through his love for music and he wants you to take notice.

With its sonic powers and its imminent need to make you sway to its rhythm, it is no wonder music will always be a firm favourite among us all.

Popular local DJ, Josi Chavè, harnesses this power to achieve his goal of rhythmic persuasion while also living out his dreams behind the turntables. Born in Soweto, he moved to Ferndale when he was a young boy.

His career started off with him just producing music out of sheer interest. “Growing up in the township there was always something to do on the streets and then when I moved to Ferndale, I found there was very little to do there,” said Chavè.

In his case, idle hands didn’t lead to mischief, instead, they lead him straight to the fascinating world of music production software. This software would later assist him to compile music for television and to create soundtracks. One of his fondest memories was when he played his first event which came by chance.

“I was asked to play a set because the people at the event seemed to look bored,” said Chavè.

From that night, he was hooked and by 2009 he was a playing in clubs and later released CD compilations through Soul Candi Records. Throughout his career, he has worked with acclaimed DJs such as DJ Zinhle, DJ Fistaz Mixwell and Mo Flava. He has also compiled music libraries for several local soapies such as Isibaya, Skeem Saam and Selimathunzi to name a few.

Chavè is a DJ on Yfm and helps upcoming artists to produce music and to build their careers.

He hopes that the next five years will see him not only have a sustainable business but grow sustainable businesses around him.

“We need to educate youth to realise their potential and be a role model to aspiring DJs as well as creatives.”
