Maftown Heights magic set to rock Newtown

HONEYDEW – Motswako rapper and founder of Maftown Heights, Khuli Chana speaks about the greatness of Maftown Heights that will descend on Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown.

The 7th annual Maftown Heights is set to weave its magic once more in Newtown.
The Festival will take place on 25 November and thousands of motswako music lovers from all over the country will flock again in their thousands to Mary Fitzgerald Square. The festival promotes motswako music, which is Setswana rap.
Founder of the festival, Khulane Morule popularly known by his stage name Khuli Chana, a Honeydew resident, spoke about the growth of the festival over the past seven years. “What makes Maftown Heights special is that it is authentic and it has changed the hip-hop game in the sense that people can now proudly rap in their mother tongue,” he said.

He explained that even though motswako originated from the North West Province where Setswana is predominantly spoken, it caters for other hip-hop artists to also share in the festival.
Artist such as Stoan Seete, Bafahlile and Jabulani Tsambo, better known as HHP, pioneered the music genre and pushed it into the spotlight thus introducing artists such as Tuks Senganga, Momolemi, Casper Nyovest and even himself, said Khuli Chana.

“Maftown Heights is a festival that bridges the gap between motswako, Durban and Johannesburg rap, that is why we have friends of motswakowhich comprise hip-hop artists who support the festival and this year, we have artists such as A- Reece, Da Les and AKA who will be among many who will hit the stage,” he said.
Last year Maftown Heights attracted over 10 000 people and Khuli Chana attributed this to his production team’s effort and hard work as they had to ensure that everything was organised in time for the festival. He pointed out that many of the artists who will hit the Maftown Heights stage have had a good year in terms of releasing new music and that fans should brace themselves for a surprise-filled festival.
“What we give to the fans is quality over quantity and we make sure that we go all-out from the sound production to the artist’s performance. We ensure that the artists who will grace the stage have all the toys they need,” he said.

Khuli Chana added that the moment he looked forward to the most during the festival, was the Absolute moment during his live performance.
Fans can look forward to Khuli Chana’s performing his new track titled One Source.
Tickets are available at Computicket.
