Bring a smile to a little face

The season of giving is upon us, and one thing I have learned in my few weeks as editor is that this community gives more than others.
Following the floods that hit Joburg two weeks ago, we put out a small plea on our websites for donations towards the victims. Before I knew it, bags of groceries and clothing were arriving at our door.
Looking at the pile of essentials growing in the corner of my office, I realised one thing for sure – my community rocks! I am so proud that so many people came to the party, giving as much as they could manage, to the people who needed it most. Donations from anonymous residents valuing into the thousands of Rands.
Thank you all, truly, truly, thank you!
We may not, ourselves, be able to look upon the faces of those who receive from our generosity, but I know in my heart that our small contributions will mean the world to those who have suffered so greatly.
I would like to extend our community’s generosity. This week, we decorated our office Christmas tree. I know that it is only November (I can hear my mother and father in the background telling me that Christmas trees only go up in mid-December), but there is method to my madness. While I am frantically shopping for odds and ends to fill my babies’ Christmas stockings, I am constantly aware that there are hundreds of children living beside us who will get nothing at all.
This hurts my heart, and I know as a community we can do something about it.
I would like to ask if, as a community, we could fill the empty space under our office tree with gifts for children less fortunate than our own. They do not need to be elaborate and they do not need to be new, they just need to bring a smile to a little face this December.
We will be collecting gifts over the next couple of weeks, and will then make sure that they are distributed to where they are needed most.
If you would like to participate, please get in touch with me directly. I can organise to collect your gifts from you, or you can drop off at our offices in Honeydew. Help us to make this a spectacular festive season for all the little ones in our community.
