SA artist shares the joy in new production

FERNDALE – Wouter Kellerman looks forward to combining his music with dance again.

Wouter Kellerman, Grammy award-winning South African flutist, producer and composer embarks on a new collaboration in the production, Joys of Sharing.

In Joys of Sharing, music and dance will be inseparable as Kellerman, Afro-soul diva Simphiwe Dana and the Vuyani Dance Theatre dancers come together.

“I’ve always thought of music and dance as something that belongs together, which has been the case in Africa for centuries. When I started writing my own music, our performances always had dancers, but since then it hasn’t always been possible. This is an opportunity for me to explore those ideas again and integrate dance and music into a beautiful whole,” said Kellerman.

Kellerman was recognised for his talent at the age of 10, and after studying abroad, he released his debut album, Colour, in 2008. Kellerman has gone on to win six South African Music Awards (Samas) as well as a Grammy for his 2014 album, Wings of Samsara, a collaboration with Indian composer Ricky Kej.

The album also reached number one on the Billboard New Age Album Charts. Kellerman’s follow-up release, Love Language, was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.

Even with all these accolades under his belt, he is still excited for Joys of Sharing – his first collaboration with Dana. “Combine Simphiwe’s unique and soulful vocals and some original and heartfelt flute sounds, and we’re looking forward to a sweet spot of creativity and expression,” said Kellerman.

“There is a lot of emotive depth within the show. I hope the audience will be moved, then the passion of the artists shines through in the performance, making it a very uplifting experience.”

Joys of Sharing will explode onto the stage at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City on 21 and 22 October, where a live DVD recording will also take place.
