Succulent show kickstarts spring

EMMARENTIA – The Succulent society hosted its annual succulent spring show at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens.

The Johannesburg Succulent Society kick-started the spring season with their annual spring show at the Johannesburg Botanical Garden where all types of succulents were on display, which showed the creativity of the entrants.

Chairperson of the Johannesburg Succulent Society, Willem van Greunen said that this was their second show of the year after they hosted their annual autumn show earlier. He said it was a great way to promote indigenous plants and pointed out that succulents were easy to take care of as they required very little water.

The show ran from 10 to 11 September and featured many of South Africa’s beautiful succulents, both rare and common, as well as succulents from Madagascar, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Angola and Zimbabwe. “The majority of succulent plants are available in South Africa and we aim to educate the public on these plants and flowers,” Van Greunen noted.

He added that their show attracted people from all over Joburg. “A lot of people who visit our show, come to find out the names of their plants as there are so many different types of succulents and the owners are intrigued as to what they are called.”

He urged residents who were interested in succulents to join their meetings on the first Wednesday of every month at the Johannesburg Botanical Garden.

Magda Nagel drove all the way from Vanderbijlpark to see the succulents on display. “I have just started a new garden and I am looking for new additions,”she said. She explained that she found succulents very easy to grow, and as the country is gripped by a drought, this was the smartest plant to have.
