Aladdin set to dazzle audiences

BRAAMFONTEIN – Theatre production fans can look forward to Aladdin at the Peoples Theatre.

The Disney’s Aladdin stage production will take place at the Peoples Theatre in Braamfontein from 7 March.

Actor Sean McGrath, who lives in Linden, is passionate about acting in stage productions. He said he finished his musical theatre degree in 2011 and started working soon after he graduated from Tshwane University of Technology.

McGrath plays the villan Jafar who is the Sultan’s most trusted advisor and also an evil sorcerer.

“So far I have acted in four productions for the Peoples Theatre in the past five years. I enjoy the fact that Jafar adds so much dynamic to the character, it makes it such fun to perform and explore some things that are not in your comfort zone,” said McGrath.

In order to prepare for the role, McGrath said that he goes through a process before he is fully prepared to play a role.

“Once I receive a script I read through it and see how the character is throughout, which helps me to see how their performance develops. I then watch material related to the character and develop a voice for it. Once I am on stage, I slowly put all the pieces together to develop the character,” explained McGrath.

He said that people can expect a production with high energy, full of action with beautiful singing that will keep children entertained from the beginning to the end. He added that people can also expect romance and comedy that will have everyone in stitches.

“The production is written in such a way that is suited for all ages, some would say that parents will get sucked into a world of being a kid again,” described McGrath.

The musical staging and choreography is directed by Sandy Dyer who also worked with music director Raymond Verster.
