An artist’s impression

LINDEN – Cedric the artist believes in the richness of art.

Cedric Hicks has been an artist his whole life.

“I started painting when I was very young, it all started with colouring-in books and has gone from there,” said the Linden resident. He often showcases his work at art exhibitions and large wall murals. “I look for inspiration from everything, from all kinds of places and areas.”

The challenges he faces in the art world are what he describes as ‘Graffiti Art’. “This is a new up-and-coming trend that people are latching on to and I personally believe that it relates to urban decay,” Hicks explained, adding that the art world is extremely cliquey. “It is difficult to get into the inner circle and to be given the opportunity to showcase your art work.”

Hicks enjoys painting walls – the bigger, the better. “I love to see a large blank wall that is craving to be filled with creativity. The bigger the wall, the better the challenge.” He described the great feeling of selling a piece of art work. “It gives you such inspiration to know that your work is appreciated.”

He advised aspiring artists to ‘be real’. “Be yourself. Don’t listen to the ‘so called art teachers’ too attentively. Do what makes you happy and what you want to do.”

After living in Europe for a short time, Hicks drew inspiration from the culture which is abundant in parts of Europe. “I am an old-school type of person. I love the richness that came out before and during the Renaissance period.” He commented that there isn’t technology, there is just pure talent.
