Ariel and Sebastian come to life

NORTHCLIFF – Local performers set the stage alight at the Joburg Theatre.

An adaption of Disney’s The Little Mermaid is being enacted at the Joburg Theatre from 2 November to 24 December and it consists of two very talented local performers who have a love for the arts.

Noni Mkhonto, an alumni of Northcliff High School, who plays the character of Sebastian in the play, said that she always had the acting bug.

“My family said that I was always a performer, I would sing around the house and just entertain,” said Mkhonto.

The vivacious performer said that she was scouted by an agent while she performed the lead in Annie while in Matric and was subsequently asked to join the agency. Mkhonto would urge anyone who is looking to start a career in the arts to be dedicated and to have a deep love for it.

“Don’t do it for the fame, go study then pursue your dreams and educate yourself beyond what you know,” said Mkhonto.

The Northcliff resident said that although her family took a while to warm up to her following a career in the arts, their reluctance did not hinder her dreams and now they see her love for it and are all for it.

Her equally talented co-star, Sarah Rachel Malherbe, who plays the lead role of Ariel said that her love for the theatre came from her family which has always been involved in the arts.

“My wanting to be involved in plays started when I was little and I’d watch the performers on stage, it spoke to me and I have been hooked ever since,” said Malherbe.

The ambitious thespian’s biggest dream is to one day perform on Broadway and eventually have roles in movies. Her favourite actor is Helen Bonham Carter because of her diversity of roles and her performances as an actor.

The Linden resident concluded with a few sentiments for those who are looking to pursue their dreams.

“Be careful what information you take from others, just be brave, believe in yourself and gain the experience you need,” said Malherbe.
