Editor's note

Get checked this month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and all women should go for a check up.

Cancer is a silent killer and it is one of the most serious diseases women face.

This month is Breast Cancer Awareness month and it is a great reminder to us all to get checked.

I think in today’s busy lifestyle people don’t take the time to go for check-ups, rather we wait until something is wrong – and with cancer, waiting until something is wrong might just be too late.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and according to the 2009 National Cancer Registry, one in 33 women in South Africa have a lifetime risk for breast cancer.

Therefore, educating yourself about the symptoms and warning signs of all cancers – especially breast cancer – and doing self-examinations, are vital. All women should be going for cancer screenings regularly.

To all the cancer survivors who raise awareness through their experiences, it takes tremendous courage to stand up in front of strangers and tell your stories, stories that save people’s lives, thank you.

Let’s all pledge to support Breast Cancer Awareness month and all the women who won the fight against cancer, get checked and encourage our friends and family to get checked.

For more details please contact the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) or contact your local CANSA Care Centre  to arrange for a breast examination.
