Editor's note

Think about what you write online

If you wouldn't say it to someone you know, then don't say it at all.

Do you consider yourself a bully?

Take a moment to think about your answer. Have you ever commented on an online post about how fat or ugly someone is? Have you shared stories that make fun of other people?

If you are really honest with yourself, you will probably find that at some stage or another you have said something online you regret.

It is so easy to post nasty comments online to a stranger or be utterly rude and write hurtful things about someone, because you know you will in all likelihood never meet that person.

Most of the time you would never have said that to someone if they were standing right in front of you. So, why say it at all? Why would you deliberately want to hurt someone?

I think we all need to remember that there is someone on the other end of our post who may be offended by what we write.

The dangers of speaking your mind online or posting naked pictures of yourself, is that even if you think you have deleted your post, it is never completely erased in cyber space.

More and more often now, WhatsApp messages are used as evidence in court and any post in the public domain which includes Facebook and Twitter can be used by any media organisation.

Although you think only a handful of people will see what you are posting, your words could potentially be seen by millions.

Next time, you think of posting anything online, please take a minute and think about how your post will affect other people and how it could potentially come back to bite you.
