Editor's note

Are you for or against paid parking?

Do you think we should be expected to pay for parking at government departments?

So most people have to go to the shops pretty often and we all have to at one stage or another visit a government department.

I am at the shops almost every day and having to draw cash to pay for parking is one of my biggest pet peeves. I am one of those people who swipe for everything. With the high crime rate I just think it is safer not to carry a wallet full of money and it is cheaper to swipe.

The only problem is that almost all shopping centres charge for parking and you cannot swipe your card at the machine so you have to look for an ATM before you can leave.

Most of the time I try to draw 100 bucks otherwise it’s not worth it and then I have to go and buy a cold drink to break the note – because the parking machine either doesn’t take R100 notes or gives you a handful of loose change. It irritates the hell out of me, but at least then I have some change to give to the car guard.

I get why people have to pay for parking at shopping centres, but paying for parking at a government department bugs me. I know we would all like to have safe parking when we stop at, for example Home Affairs, but why do we have to pay for this.

We have to cough out money where ever we go and now at most government institutions we have to pay too. And worst of all there is never an ATM close by. I think this is a bit unfair because it should be included in the taxes we pay and the costs of the services these departments provide.

For me I just think it is ridiculous to expect people to just fork out money at every turn.

What do you think? Are you for or against paid parking at government departments?
