The Market Theatre Laboratory seeks next generations of actors

NEWTOWN – Lights, camera, action, as The Market Theatre Laboratory looks for actors.

If you are passionate, talented and focused, The Market Theatre Laboratory is looking for the next generation of young actors for their popular Performance and Theatre Skills Training Programme.

The Market Theatre Laboratory was founded by John Kani and Barney Simon in 1988, and offers a practical two-year course in theatre and performance. The aim is to train young performers and theatre-makers to be professional, disciplined and excellent in the craft.

The classes offered by the programme include acting, physical theatre, singing, movement, voice, writing and theatre design. These classes are offered by highly skilled professionals and visiting artists who are active in the industry such as Dorothy Gould, Princess Mhlongo and Kgafela Magagodi.

Education officer of the Market Theatre Laboratory Clara Vaughn welcomes students to send applications until 30 September free of charge. There is no limit to the number of individuals who want to apply, although a maximum of 20 students will be accepted to study at the laboratory.

After applications have been accepted, acting hopefuls will be required to prepare a rehearsed performance of their own and will also have to to choose between three monologues that will be provided, to perform for a panel of industry professionals.

Vaughn provided some helpful tips for students to do and not do during the audition process. “Applicants can prepare for the audition process by watching an actual theatre production to get an idea of what they want to study, be fully prepared by memorising lines and avoid giving half hearted-performances that lack passion,” she said.

A full-time course will require a R9 500 once-off payment for the full one-year course. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35 years and will be notified if they qualify for an audition by 31 October.

Details: The Market Theatre Laboratory 011 383 74 98.

The applications for this full time course will start will be open from 15 August to 30 September in order to study in 2016
