Former carpenter builds a film career

NORTH RIDING – Model Melgin sends waves in the romantic comedies.

Television personality and model Melgin Tasirenyika is well known for his TV commercials. But he is now working on his third romantic comedy and drama film called My first boyfriend. Two of his films including So near yet so far will be aired before the end of September on Zambezi Magic channel.

“My first 2014 drama Sour Milk will be aired on Mzansi Magic within two weeks,” he said. The former carpenter was born and grew up in Zimbabwe, but came to South Africa in 2008 to further his acting career. “At home we did not have those opportunities, but on my arrival here I settled and now I am a permanent North Riding resident.” He added that after studying, he landed his first TV job.

“I featured on the SABC 3 soapie Isidingo – The Need where I was an extra featured at the Duncan Hotel. Since then, I have been on 16 TV commercials and dramas and also produced my own work at the same time,” he said.

Tasirenyika, who is also a writer, producer and musician, also featured on the SABC 1 soapie Generations: The Legacy. “I think since I came in this country I have achieved a lot more than I would have achieved if I stayed in Zimbabwe. Those were some of the reasons why I came here, giving my future a break.”

He added that he grew up wanting to be a police officer but worked as a carpenter for two years in Zimbabwe. “But my talent and dreams of acting pushed me hard. I had to follow my heart, quit everything and cross the border,” said Tasirenyika.

“My first drama Sour Milk, I wrote and produced it myself. It is about love and betrayal. The second, So near yet so far was written by Myre Maramba, I was the producer. It is about a love affair started on Facebook. Two youngsters fell in love but the man left her after meeting another woman. Again after discovering his new lover was secretly on drugs, he ended the relationship and went back to his Facebook lover. So the romantic comedy is about love and drugs,” he said.

Tasirenyika concluded that My lost boyfriend is “all about first boyfriends, the ups and downs of childhood lovers”.
