Before you become a model

RANDBURG – Things you need to know about modelling before becoming a model.

Here are some things you need to know about becoming a model, said Figures Models Randburg owner Merlene Spies and two of her models, Saskia Wagner and Jamie Fermor.

All shapes and sizes are required in the modelling industry.

Models are required for the runways (catwalks), fashion shows all over the world, in magazines and in TV commercials.

You must understand that modelling can be seasonal (types of models are used for certain shoots, shows or looks), be able to deal with rejection, and not give up.

You never really know where your strength lies until you do training.

Find a reputable modelling agency or academy and make an appointment.

If an agency rejects you, there may be another one looking for someone like you.

What kind of modelling you want to venture into will depend on a few things.

High fashion modelling is for tall and lean figures that grace the catwalks, showing off designers’ outfits.

The international requirements are generally 1.70m to 1.83m or taller for females, with bust size 32–34.

Male models should be between 1.80m to 1.88m tall with very good physique.

Editorial print modelling is for magazine editorials and covers. The requirements are similar, but you need to be photogenic.

Commercial print modelling involves advertising in magazines, products, or on billboards.

Catalogue modelling is for clothing line products, and is lucrative.

The model is chosen to represent the various target markets. Character modelling, or modelling in TV commercials, does not require a certain height, size or age. Brands are continuously searching for models to suit their products.

Body parts modelling can involve eyes, lips, hair, hands, feet or legs, which are used to promote products in magazines or television.

This is very lucrative. Alternative modelling is for the “not so everyday” kind of model.

It can involve tattoos and certain looks. Plus size modelling is on the increase in the industry. Typical body size is 12–16. Plus sized models are required to have good skin, teeth and hair.

Glamour modelling ranges from swimwear to lingerie shoots to artistic and nude photography.

This kind of model has to be beautiful, sexy and confident. Height restrictions do not apply.

The purpose of a modelling academy is to nurture you and assist you with the necessary skills for a professional career.

The courses will teach you runway techniques, how to walk the runway, make-up application, skin and hair care, posture, exercise and nutrition, confidence, projection and how to deal with rejection.
