Jed Bullock (14) and Lucretious Masanga (13) train at Dance Web, Bryanston. They participated in the junior section (ages 12 to 15) at the championships.

Together, they won a gold medal in the Hip-hop Duo category and a silver in the Electric Boogie Duo category. Bullock also won a bronze in the Hip-hop Battles Solos category and came sixth in the Hip-hop Solos category.

Their crew, Dye-Namic, came fifth in the Hip-hop Battles Teams category and 12th in the Hip-hop Small Groups category.

“It was pretty tough,” Bullock said.

He added that the secret to the pair’s success was to “connect with each other, have energy, and connecting with the judges”.

He explained that many dancers were too afraid to look the judges in the eye, but they did, which displayed confidence.

Masanga said that the secret to their success was “lots of practice, hard work and lots of late nights”.

Bullock’s parents, Craig and Mandy, own Dance Web.

“It has been a privilege seeing them grow as dancers and achieve at such a high level,” Craig said.

“For not just me, but for all South Africans.”

Mandy said that she is “ecstatic” and “extremely proud” of the two, especially her son. “To win a gold against that kind of quality is amazing,” she said.
